conducting

What I love about conducting is the sense of collaboration. Whether I am working with an ensemble of professional colleagues or with students, I cherish the sense of community that I feel when making music with others. As a conductor, I am passionate about performing both new and old music. Premiering a brand new work brings the thrill of learning to hear and understand new sonic relationships, and performing older work allows the opportunity to reconsider the experiences of music that was written for a different time. My conducting teachers have been Russell Guyver, Lucas Vis, Harvey Sollberger, and Steve Schick. My primary engagements as a conductor are currently at California Institute of the Arts and with wasteLAnd ensemble. At CalArts, I am the director of the Instrumental Arts Specialization where I teach conducting and composition and run “The Ensemble” which is a chamber orchestra/new music ensemble. I am the co-founder and current co-director of wasteLAnd ensemble and concert series where I conduct (when a conductor is needed), and collaborate in programming, production, and fundraising endeavors.

I co-founded wasteLAnd in 2013 with Scott Worthington. We started as a concert series, but became something more like a hybrid ensemble/series. Our first concert was in February of 2014 and since then, we have presented over 50 concerts comprising over 200 pieces, more than 40 of which have been world or US premieres. wasteLAnd’s original mission was to present the music we love to Los Angeles and to shine a light on the incredible musicians who live in this city. Most of our concerts have been centered around chamber music, but about once every season, we have expanded to present music for larger ensembles. Though we are proud of the premieres we have had the opportunity to present, our focus has been in second or third performances of music that has been premiered and then forgotten. The current directors who run wasteLAnd with me are Matt Barbier, Dustin Donahue, and Rachel Beetz.
